had no experience of water works it was decided to place him in charge of the sewerage system, and to place Mr.Hollings- worth, who had experience of municipal works' at home, and was employed here on the construction of the Wongneichong Reservoir in charge of the water works, as soon as Mr.Crook has had time to initiate them both into their new duties.
This will take two-months at least, and it
is: not possible therefore, for Mr.Crook to leave HongKong before the end of July.
3. With regard to filling the vacancy caused by Mir.Crook's transfer, it is hoped that if an officer who has had special training and experience in water works is sent out in connection with the projected works in the Tycam Valley as requested in Sir H.A. Blake's despatch No.56 of the 13th. Febru- ary, 1900, and my despatch No.212 of the 11th.May, 1900, and if
: Mr.Crook reports well of Mr.Hollingsworth at the end of 2
months arrange departmentally for the discharge of the duties hitherto, performed by Mr.Crook without asking for a special officer to be selected to succeed him.
4. In that case certain promotions in the Dept.
I may be recommended bo you, le
leaving a vacancy for an Assistant Engineer at $1,800 who could perhaps be obtained locally.
5. I trust that the arrangements I have made
will meet with your approval.
Recognising that you desired the transfer
of Mr.Crook to Gibraltar at an early date, I have endeavoured to carry out your wishes with as little detriment to the public
service as possible.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most Obedient,
· Rumble Servant,
M.J. Gascoig
